What to Check Before You Buy Used Scaffolding

Good used scaffolding works just like new. Damaged or mismatched scaffolding is a safety risk and a costly mistake. Ask the seller for close-up photos, and check these points before you pay.

  • Frames and standards: no bends, dents, kinks or flattened tubes, especially on legs.
  • Welds: no cracks or broken welds at joints, ladder rungs or connectors.
  • Rust and corrosion: surface rust is common, but pitting or flaking steel is not acceptable.
  • Planks and decking: no splits, warping, delamination, or damaged hooks and end caps.
  • Braces, pins and locks: all present, straight and working, with locks that engage properly.
  • Base plates, screw jacks and casters: threads clean, nothing bent, and casters that lock.
  • Manufacturer and model: know what you are buying so you can match parts and look up load ratings.
  • Quantities: count complete sets, not just pieces, so the scaffold can be built the way it was designed.
Inspect before each shiftOSHA 1926.451(f)(3): scaffolds and components must be inspected for visible defects by a competent person before each work shift.
Damaged parts come outOSHA 1926.451(f)(4): damaged or weakened components must be repaired, replaced, braced, or removed from service.
Mixing brandsOSHA 1926.451(b)(10): parts from different manufacturers can't be intermixed unless they fit together without force and the scaffold stays structurally sound.
Mixing metalsOSHA 1926.451(b)(11): dissimilar metals can't be used together unless a competent person decides galvanic action won't reduce their strength.
