What to Check Before You Buy Used Scaffolding
Good used scaffolding works just like new. Damaged or mismatched scaffolding is a safety risk and a costly mistake. Ask the seller for close-up photos, and check these points before you pay.
- Frames and standards: no bends, dents, kinks or flattened tubes, especially on legs.
- Welds: no cracks or broken welds at joints, ladder rungs or connectors.
- Rust and corrosion: surface rust is common, but pitting or flaking steel is not acceptable.
- Planks and decking: no splits, warping, delamination, or damaged hooks and end caps.
- Braces, pins and locks: all present, straight and working, with locks that engage properly.
- Base plates, screw jacks and casters: threads clean, nothing bent, and casters that lock.
- Manufacturer and model: know what you are buying so you can match parts and look up load ratings.
- Quantities: count complete sets, not just pieces, so the scaffold can be built the way it was designed.

Only if the parts fit together without force and the scaffold keeps its structural integrity, according to OSHA 1926.451(b)(10). Dissimilar metals, such as steel and aluminum, can only be used together if a competent person determines that galvanic action will not reduce their strength.
